- milk

- cheddar cheese
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
- Heat a pan or cast iron skillet on the stove over medium heat. Add ground sausage and bacon pieces and cook until sausage is browned and bacon is cooked but still a little soft, about 10 minutes. Stir occasionally while cooking.
- While the meat is cooking, beat eggs in a large bowl. Add milk, salt, and mustard to the eggs and mix.
- Add cubed bread, cheese, bacon, and sausage to the egg mixture and gently stir.
- Pour the mixture into a 9x13 casserole dish. Cover and refrigerate overnight, approximately 6-8 hours.
- In the morning, preheat oven to 350°. Bake the casserole uncovered for 45 minutes until the center is set and the edges are slightly golden. Let stand a few minutes before serving.
Hint: Use freshly shredded cheese instead of pre-shredded because it will melt better. Preshredded cheese has anti-caking agents added to keep the cheese from clumping in the bag, but that also means it doesn't melt as well.
Substitutions
- Bacon Egg Casserole - If you prefer only bacon, substitute the sausage with the same amount of bacon.
- Sausage & Egg Casserole - If you prefer only sausage, substitute the bacon with the same amount of sausage.
- Mild Pork Ground Sausage - You can substitute it with chicken sausage or for a spicy kick, get a spicy ground sausage.
- Milk - Use your favorite milk of choice.
- Dry Mustard - If you don't have it, you can omit it. It definitely adds some good flavor though.
- Cheddar Cheese - Switch up the flavors by substituting other cheeses like Colby jack, swiss, or pepper jack cheese. Freshly shredded cheese is preferred though as it melts best.
